Agree with Dan. Webb won't be able to avoid the spotlight completely but I think the more he can at this stage of his career the better. He has plenty of time to be a media darling. Just concentrate on becoming a succesful racer first!

Too late folks !!! Nothing Webb can do now but run as fast as he can ... He has been marked as the future and unless someone else comes along and does what he did at a young age (can you say Not Gonna Happen Anytime Soon ??) he's it ...

Webb is the biggest thing since Ryun ... He has the spotllight and it ain't gonna get turned off any time soon ...

I don't know that I fully agree with that. Yes, the focus will be on him any time he laces up the spikes, but there's much less general talk about him now that he's been out of the spotlight for a year or two. It's more of a morbid curiosity if he'll return to form than an expectation for him to excel... Tooting his horn at this point will just put the pressure back on. If he quietly does what ne needs to and gets back into top form, his first few races ought to speak plenty loud and he'll get all the attention he could possibly want.

Nice picture of Webb on the Table of Contents page of T&FN. No mention in the article of Raczko stepping down.
My opinion of Webb has shifted quite a bit based on Chris Lear's book "Sub 4:00", a great read, by the way. Lear has the ability to cover all the characters without making anyone look like the bad guy. Not an easy task, especially in this particular situation.
I see Webb on the way back. I believe he simply lacked the maturity to allow himself the time to come back from the achilles injury from 2002. I'm sure it was not lost on him what Brannen did in the NCAA's, breaking 30 minutes. I wonder if he has some regrets about leaving Michigan. Of course, he can't go back, not after taking the money. It would also be interesting to see if his opinion on mileage has changed in the past year.
Recommend picking up the book. You won't be disappointed.

I don't see Nike dumping Webb. Both he and Lincoln ran for the Nike Farm Team at the USATF's. Nike Farm Team came in third in the mens team race, and first in the womens.

Nike won't dumdp Webb ... Until someone else clearly steps forward he is still the US best young hope ... K-nakker will outperform him this year, but he is still the future until someone else makes a major move ...

I still say Nike should hook him up with K-nakker and his coach .... That would almost insure his success in my opinion ...

Webb wins the 5000 at the Penn Relays in 13:41. He runs the mile tomorrow. That will surely be in the television coverage!!

Will be interesting to see what he runs ... Has to have a decent year this year ... Won't have a shot at another Games for four more years !!! I'd say he needs to be in 3:56 range tomorrow if he wants to be competitive in Athens ... Will need to be near 3:52 by the Trials ... 3:50 in Athens .... At least my take on it ..../

The good news is that Webb won.

The bad news is that he ran a 4:04.

It would have been nice to see him run faster but he may have been running just fast enough to beat his competition.

I haven't seen the full results, but I believe Webb ran a 3:35 for 1500m this weekend. That would certainly silence the critics, myself included. That's 1-2 seconds faster than his HS record pace. Thumbs Up

I turned the tv on in time to see the last two laps. He blew everyone away and won by 4 seconds.

Was it an extended push from the start or a huge kick?

I saw the "highllights" of Mo and Marion's 100's. Mo's fire extinguisher antics at the end were ridiculous. Left me extremely embarrassed for him.

The race had already started when I turned it on. But with 2 laps to go he was way out front so it looks like he just ran away with it from the start.

I didn't see Mo. What did he do this time?

As soon as he crossed the line, he tore off his shoes, threw them down, and someone ran out from the infield with a fire extinguisher and sprayed them down with foam, presumably because his feet were on fire from running so fast... Rolling Eyes We'll see who's the cocky SOB when Mo gets injured in the semis of US Nats or the Olympics. I can only hope for his sake that his competitors are a bit more humble when his time comes to get egg in the face.

Webbs race was beautiful to watch ... Rabbit went out a bit fast ... But Webb was near the front the entire way ... Took charge before the bell and ran strong around the track ... Nothing spectacular but VERY solid run ... Looked impressive in how strong he looked ...

Mo's race was also beautiful ... And I thought his little thing at the end was fun ... I've seen it a hundred times now ... On sportscenter and the general news ... On the Best Damned Sports Show Period, Around the Horn, and other sports talk shows ... Reaction has been split ... But ya know what ??? Its the only thing on the news I've seen lately regarding track and field that DIDN"T mention drugs/USADA/BALCO/THG ... For the first time this spring the talk was about exuberence and the sport ... Now some question whether it was over the top ... But almost all said there initial reaction was smiling and/or laughter .... After which everyone has wanted to analyze it and decide if it was "appropriate" ... I liked it simply becasue it brought some FUN back to the sport ...
