From Joe Vigil:
Quote: | You learn to work with people and plant seeds along the way. It's up to them to water them. ... I don't think coaches that only coach get the job done. You have to teach them to be good humans, too. And have integrity. |

In his glory days @ Adams State Vigil had an elite group of students (3.5 gpa and above I think) that would meet at his house every week and discuss a book that they had read that week. Quickly many of his athletes wanted to join the book club but Vigil kept the standard for entry high.
When I heard Vigil tell this story at a clinic I was impressed. I was also impressed with the 13 masters degrees that Mr. Vigil has recieved. He is one of the people I try to emulate in my coaching. |

Joe Vigil is without a doubt one of the best coaches the US has ever produced, in any sport. I put him right up there with John Wooden and Newt Rockney. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Here's another good quote that could easily pertain to training:
"Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go."

Oh, swell!! Now, on top of the 50 running books I have to read, I have to read literary classics over the last 200 years!!
In all seriousness (who, me?) I don't know if I've seen a better quote that pertains to individual athletics than that one. After all, the vast majority of athletes (there are exceptions, of course!) have simply gone by the wayside because they got too old, or they got injured too late in their careers, or they got passed by (beat!). Your body sends you messages that its time to step down, but we just ignore them. I am not not talking about the running we do as Masters here, but the conception that we can compete with 20's something when we are in our upper 30's.

Regina Jacobs would definitely qualify as one of the "exceptions". But there will come a point where she will be trampled by someone like Teter if she doesn't call it quits at some point. And I'm hoping she can stay hot through 2004. By the way, what happens when you marry your coach and then you fade and become non-competitive at some point?? If Jacobs remains healthy, she already qualifies as a major force in Masters.

People have gotten divorced for a lot less...
I think Regina is someone that will stay in the sport as long as it remains fun for her. Heck, it's not like she races for the international exposure.
