I agree that temporary tracks should either be disallowed, not warrant world record consideration, or at the very least have asterisks next to any marks set there. At the same time, I sort of feel that there are too many uncontrollable factors that everyone responds differently to, such as altitude, heat, wind, crowd noise, pressure, etc., to try and control something like the track surface. So long as they run the right distance...

I'm not advocating trying to control anything regarding competition .. The uncontrolable factors often make things more exciting .. But a track that is engineered specifically to be "fast" does not fall under "uncontrolable factors" .. Quite the opposite .. The most controlled of all factors and relating directly to performance ... Like Marion going to Sestriere to set PRs or Mennea heading to Mexico City to get a WR ... Except those places are thre for others to attempt the same thing should they choose ... Atlanta is lost forever and only a few got their chance ... And I think the results show that it was something special ... !!! |

You guys mentioned most of the track events but you seem to have left off one race, the 3000m steeplechase. Who do you think are the best americans and world athletes in the race? |

Well ... Best americans I would say would be Tim Broe and Mark Croghan .. although Croghan didn't have a very good year on the clock last yet ..
World wise I would say Boulami (new WR holder) and then pick your Kenyan ... Still a good sized gap between US and the rest of the world .. At least the top of the heap in the world ... |

I guess we talked about the steeple but didn't really finalize a list... I thought we did, but maybe not.
Anyway, I would add Pascal Dobert at the top of the US steeple list, assuming he's able to bounce back and return to health.

Not a problem, I've kept plenty busy myself. On that note, I need to head out to practice!
