My initial reaction is that he probably won't, but I really like how he's not afraid of anything. He openly says what he wants to do and goes for it... and usually gets it as we all know. I didn't think he'd get gold in the 1500 OR the 5000 at the olympics, but he pulled those off (I know... he got a little lucky in the 5k).
I guess what I'm saying is that I have no idea, but it will be really interesting to watch. I'd like to see Bekele and El Guerrouj race a fast 5k. I doubt they'd do a record attempt together but it would be good to see how ElG does when the first half of the race isn't done at a jog. |

Even though this is an old topic and despite his glittering career achievements, I feel El G's potential was still left somewhat untapped
His WRs 3:26.00, 3:43.13 & 4:44.79 awesome. But the way he ran when at his peak was just scaringly easy. He oozed relaxation and during his assualts on the WR he looked as if he was going on a morning stroll
If he had received tip-top pacing [he received some awesome pacing from 01-03, 02 sticking out in my mind when he reached 1200m in some very fast times and just narrowly missing his WR on the run-in] when in his 98-00 form he could've claimed the 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 2000 & 3000 records with times of 2:11.0, 3:24.5, 3:41.9, 4:43.5 & 7:18.5 - his 7:23.09 3K was something of pure magic - when time-machines are created, I'd love to pit 96/97 Komen vs. 98/99 El G in a 3K; it truly would be a race for the ages _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

If he'd have concentrated on the 5K, I see no reason in seeing El G claim every title available to him at the distance, and to set numerous WRs. Probably pushing the WR down into the 12:35 region - had El G set an awesome 5K WR it would've been mighty fun to see Bekele try and chase it _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

Can't disagree with you there - it would have been amazing to see ElG move up a bit sooner and have a few races with the two of them going after the WR at the 5000 _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |
