i was pleased with my time mile. I probably could hav done a little bit better, but i am not that good at pacing myself yet. I thought i ws going too fast at first so i slowed down a little, which wasnt really a good idea, but anyway the time was 5:41. Alright i will talk later, goodbye all

Nice run Tim. Looks like you have some talent to work with so just be patient and watch yourself improve.

Hello everyone, today at practice we did about 8 1/2 miles total. 1/2 mile warm up, 7 mile tempo run, and then 1 mile cool down, and of course, push ups and sit ups. It am certainly getting better. I guess since I am just starting out, i will improve pretty fast, then the improvement will slow down once i reach a certain point. I am not really getting sore legs anymore, which is really nice, and my joints are toughening up too. So things are looking good for this season.
Tommorow is going to be a tough day. We will do hill repeats on a hill that is at least 1/2 mile long and quite steep. The coach says we will probably run it 4 - 6 times. I think we will do another time mile on thursday or friday this week. I am confident i can get a 5:35 or so on it. The coach also wants us to start doing double workouts on tuesdays and thursdays, which isnt really a pretty thought. He says we should do 3-5 miles in the morning before school, and then the practice after school. I guess it would help improve, but it certainly takes a lot of dedication to get up even earlier than you have to and run!
Anyway, i will post sometime later this week.

That is a pretty busy schedule. I'm a little suprised that the coach has you doing two a days. Anyone else suprised by that?

ha, well yes, my coach is very tough, but he is very good. He has been running for 35 years or so, and still going. He is very helpful and encouraging too. And no, no one was really surprised by him asking for doubles 3 times a week. Thats pretty much what is expected for the distance runners at my high school. Maybe thats why we slaughter the competition in mile and 2 miles Very Happy . Anyway, today we did a typical 6 1/2 miler, and yesterday was hill repeats, which can only be described as pure agony! Anyway, i am having problems in my left knee. It hurts to lift my foot higher than 6 inches off the ground, walk up stairs, put pants on, etc. The Coach says it is from my knee supernating or somethin when i bring my heel and toe down, to complete that step. He said i need to make sure that my footwear really is the best for my foot, and probably get a different insole for my shoe. I think he suggested one of the "Superfeet" insoles or "Down-Unders," depending on which one i prefer. He also told me the basic things for most atheletic related injuries, like icing it and maybe taking an ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory pain killer, to help get past this injury.

The advice is pretty sound. Basically, figure out what caused the problem and rectify it. Footwear is a likely culprit. Icing helps take the edge off but doesn't have much rehabilitary effect to speak of (some will disagree). Ibuprofen does little other than dull the pain, which in my opinion is the worst thing to do when there's something there that needs your attention. And the big one that didn't get mentioned is training load and recovery time, but that's between you and your coach.

At the risk of second guessing a successful coach I would wonder it the knee pain might be the result of too much too soon. But I am not there so it is hard to make that call.

well, i got a new pair of shoes. I think it was my shoes that were causing the pain. They werent quite right for my foot, plain and simple. I have a new pair now Asics Kayano X. They fit great! Its amazing what you will notice when things are pinted out to you. I was fitted by an expert at The Shoe Shoppe. Its amazing how much this guy knows about feet! www.theshoeguru.com . <- If your interested in hearing a little more about the store, but i dont think any of you are anywhere near it!

err this schedule of mine is very busy. My body is dying...owee, everything hurts... and its only going to get harder. Its either full out athlete or none at all, there is no inbetween. Running indeed is a very tough sport!

Talk to your coach and make sure he/she knows how you're holding up. Without that communication, it's always tough for a coach to gauge how each athlete in a group is doing and plan accordingly. Any good coach will welcome that feedback, as long as it isn't merely complaining.

here here Dan - agree totally - especially Tim - as a new runner you need easy days too - talk to the coach if you are that sore then you need to lay off - pushing too hard to fast is just going to get you injured and sitting on the sidelines...

i really hate to have to say this, but i will not be running with the team this year. i completely ruined my left ankle on one of our runs. a few of the other guys on the team and i were all somewhat racing with each other, and the section of land we crossed had really tall grass, the land was very rough and not level, my foot went into a hole, and then to top it off one of the guys tripped and fell on me, pushing me to left while my foot was stuck in the hole. BIG PAIN RIGHT THERE! that hurt a LOT. i damaged ligaments, tendons, you name it. The doctor didnt really make it that clear if it was a sprain, strain or whatever, but mainly just told me what i damaged and what i cant do anymore... things like this either piss me off or just leave me wondering why? why did this have to happen. I was going to be a track runner and i mess my ankle up bad enough to where i wont even be able to walk properly until mid to late season. Ankle injuries take a long time heal because of the high demand of use they have. right now im on crutches and had the option of wheelchair, but thatll just make me feel even more like a cripple. this sucks! but at least my ankle isnt as wide as my neck anymore!
