The vast majority of track athletes at my school know nothing about track and field. I was talking to one of our TJers and mentioned Jonathan Edwards. His response was, "Who?". When I explained who Edwards was the guy replyed that he thought someone from Brazil was the WR holder. And this guy is a really good althete. I'm sure a "bad" athlete's knowledge of T&F is pretty nonexistant.
I only watch Track for the mid-distance and distance events. If ESPN was going to show one hour of 60m races, I know I wouldn't watch. _________________ November 9th... |

And your point is...?

So, you're saying that's just a coincidental relationship? Either participation enjoyment does or does not correlate to spectating enjoyment...

Thats odd but as many say to each his own - I find it incomprehensible that the guy would not know who the WR holder is in his own event. When I was jumping I would always watch Willie Banks guess that dates me... You should find that film of Edwards world record jump or any tapes of Edwards jumping and show them to him - if there was ever a perfect technician in the event it was Edwards - his jumps are a thing of beauty.
Some FYI's on Brasil and the TJ
The top Brasillian last year was
17.72 1.4 Jadel Gregório BRA 16 09 1980 1 São Paulo 06 06 2004 ranked third in the world
BTW the top ten all time is
TRIPLE JUMP
18.29 60-1/4.........Jonathan Edwards (GB) 95
18.09 59-4 1/4.........Kenny Harrison (US) 96
17.97 58-11 1/2..........Willie Banks (US) 85
17.92 58-9 1/2........Khristo Markov (Bul) 87
................James Beckford (Jam) 95
17.90 58-8 3/4....Vladimir Inozemtsev (SU) 90
17.89(A) 58-8 1/2.........João Oliveira (Bra) 75
17.87 58-7 1/2............Mike Conley (US) 87
17.86 58-7 1/4.......Charlie Simpkins (US) 85
17.85 58-6 3/4........Yoelbi Quesada (Cub) 97
So there is a Brasilian on there looks like he held the record (granted at Altitude) but held it for 10 years until Willie broke it! _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

Next point on watching the events - Even though some of the coverage has been horrible I am one that loves to watch the sport and maybe its because I know a lot of runners but most seem to enjoy it as well - Good coverage is just amazing to watch
I just find it so hard to believe that These events like Poker and cheerleading competitions get better audiences than T&F... I don't buy the recognized names thing either - what average american could tell you any Poker players name? I would wager that more people could name a track and field athlete...
I hope with the sucess of Meb and Deena this summer it might do something but it remains to be seen
Just my two cents... _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

I agree, I can't understand why poker, cheerleading, billiards, bowling, spelling bees, fishing and ten year old boxing matches and football games would be shown instead of track and field, road races or cross country.
But to each his own I guess. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Yes, poker and pool (billiards) has gotten to be quite popular on some of the channels, including the Travel Channel. I know my wife enjoys watching both. _________________ Paul

I just learned yesterday that the casinos require you to be 21, so you may be out of luck.
