Raced in Olympia, Washington on Saturday. It was fairly small, about 70 people. The Saint Martin's Invitational I think it was called. I got 9th on a fairly tough 5 mile course. My time was 27:05.

It started freakishly slow for a cross country race, and picked up from there. I basically started in 9th and finished in 9th. Every time I passed someone, another guy would pass me. I was happy to make the top 10 and it wasn't bad for a season opener. The entire team is doing a "mystery race" somewhere next weekend. All I know is that it invloves a ferry, and we're coming back the same day, so it's probably in vancouver.

Also, I just found out that we were going to do the willamette race, but that plan was scrapped because we'd be racing too much if we did. Too bad.

Nice job in your college debut. Thumbs Up

Yup, I learned of that last week. Last minute change of plans, which probably explains the fill in race this weekend. Maybe next year...

Excellent race Graeme!!

That is a little unusual to start and finish in the same place with all the passing going on. I like the idea of the "mystery" race. Is the coach keeping it a secret until you get there?

Great Race Graeme, not bad at all for a college debut!! Keep it up!

i also like that idea of a mystery race early in the season something that would change from year to year...

Yeah, I think we just find out where it is when we get there. All he'll tell us is what ferry we need to catch.

Okay, time for an update.. The mystery race turned out to be at some park I can't remember the name of. It was near Bellingham WA. They had somer huge high school races, and an open race that was pretty good too. We were instructed to treat it more like a workout than a race and start slow, then work into a faster pace. I think the coach just said that to get everyone to try going out slow and see what happens. I didn't end up pushing myself too hard, more like I would in a workout and it felt good to go flying by people the whole race, even though I finished pretty far back from where I could have been. It wasn't a very important race obviously.

Last weekend we hosted a race here in Victoria. The universities of Alberta, Manitoba, Windsor and Saskatchewan were there. This was supposed to be our first big race where we show everyone how good we are, but it welt horribly.... I was sick, and had some residual whooping cough effects (it sometimes comes back on me when I have a cold) and the team in general did pretty poorly. After that we had a few meetings and regrouped as a team before running the BC Championships today. And this isn't a CIS BC championship by the way (since it doesn't exist) it was the open/age group provincials, which also happens to be qualifying for the BC team that goes to nationals. Anyways, after having one of the worst races of my life last weekend I had one of the best races of my life today. I went out way faster than I should have and decided after about a kilometer that is was too late to have a smart race, but I could at least run a smarter race than some other people, so I let the lead pack get away from me. Half way into the race (it was 7k) they had gotten a lot of distance on me, but with about 2.5 kilometers to go, one of my teammates (he's from alberta, meaning that he can't make the BC team) caught up to me and I picked it up a lot to stay with him. We battled it out for the rest of the race and in the process caught up and passed a bunch of people putting us in 5th and 6th. I think I ran harder than I've ever run in my life in the last 2k of that race and I had absolutely nothing left on the home stretch, it was a fight just to make it to the line. I might have been able to beat my teammate if I hadn't started out the way I did, but I didn't care, I was totally pumped after that. I was 5th out of the BC runners and they take 6 to nationals, so I'll probably make it. You're only guaranteed a spot on the team if you make top four, but chances are that I'll get picked unless I get totally screwed somehow. My former coach from Nanaimo is on the selection committee though so that probably won't happen (BC has a bad reputation for selecting the wrong people to teams because they didn't have anyone at the selection meeting to stand up for them). The rest of the team all had super good races as well, so it's gonna be tight to see whether I make the varsity team for CIS nationals as I'm right on the bubble. We've done all our pre-nationals races so it's in the coach's hands now.

UVic won both the junior and senior men's team titles Cool
Take THAT ubc!

Oh, and my time for 7k was 22:51 which I'm pretty happy with given that it was cross country.

Well, it's been a long time since my last update, but just thought I'd post to say that I finally broke 4 minutes in the 15. I've basically ran all my races this year trying to break 4 minutes, and I stay on pace until the last 300 and I blow up, but I finally managed to hold it together today for a 3:58. I think I might do one more race this year just to see if I can go faster, but either way, at least it starts with a 3 Smile
