Quote: | in big meets in Eugene, they will also take wind readings at the outside of lane 8 |
Are those officially recorded readings, or are they merely FYI?
If there is a discrepancy between the two readings, do they go with the higher one???

I'm not 100% accurate about this, but I think there have been situations where one of the sets of lanes, either inside four or outside four, have had their times considered wind-aided, and the other set was considered legal. This kind of situation is set up when you have the track up close to the stands. A way to prevent this would be to run the hurdles and sprints in the middle of the infield like at LSU. But the long field events would have to be contested elsewhere. _________________ Paul

Wow, I've never heard of that being done (different legal readings for different lanes). You learn something new every day...

Wow ... I'd never heard that either ... But I have been to events where you could actually feel the difference when the wind is swirling ...
Could you imagine being in a race and winning in 9.75 but your wind reading is +2.2, nd second place is 9.77 with a wind reading of +1.95 ... Your opponent loses but gets the WR !!!! _________________ Conway

I would be extremely mad if that happened. Its my guess that both would go to 2.2m/s. Or 1.95m/s. Either way I don't think they would let someone get away with that.

I think that to win the gold medal, somebody is going to have to run 9.77s or lower to win. But thats just what I think, I know you Conway think MO will run 9.83 as the Gold Medalist.
But what does everyone else think the results are going to be?

I doubt it'll take a WR to win. 9.89 is my guess, perhaps as slow as 9.92.

You're right, I think it will go around 9.83/9.85 .... That is plenty fast ... I'm not sure we'll see any more sub 9.80 races ... I think that was stopped this year ... _________________ Conway

It's interesting to note that watching the swimming contests , how the world records steadily progress almost annually as they are not affected by the same factors as running, i.e wind, track surface and i believe altitude would have no benefit either.
The progression is just down to improved training, strength and generous doses of talent and hardwork. they do not end up chasing records that seem unbreakable for decades such as the ones set at altitude, but that's an unavoidable situation in track.
Going back to the current topic of the possible winning time in the 100, I also believe it will be in the range of 9.92-9.85, but with powell taking the honours. |

I think it will be close but with Mo taking the honors Powell Second. Its just a feeling I don't know why but I think that mo will do it again. my guess at time would be 9.87, second in 9.89 |

Yea, I did go a little low saying I think that there would be. But I do believe that the record could be broken.
My prediction of the Top 3 are:
9.82s Maurice Greene
9.86s Asafa Powell
9.89s Shawn Crawford
And 4th I think will be:
9.92s Justin Gatlin |

I too find the constant record breaking in swimming to be quite interesting ... There seems to be no barriers yet in swimming ...
But I do see limits in track and I don't think we'll see a lot more spectacular sprinting from this point forward ... Good, but not spectacular ... We've already seen two of the three guys that have gone sub 9.80 to be PED users ... At the same time we see the three most prolific sprinters ever (Greene, Boldon, Fredericks) coming to the end of their careers ... AND we see that the drug testers are getting much more "diligent" in eradicating drugs from sport ...
I think this "perfect" storm signals an end to super low sprint times ... Sub 10's perhaps, but not a plethora of them and few under 9.90 (let alone sub 9.80) ... Same in the deuce ... We'll see some sub 20's - but not many below 19.80 ...
Might be time for the powers that be to consider adjusting the WR lists ... ... But then again, this is all just my own feelings ... _________________ Conway

I don't won't to appear stupid, but can someone inform me again what a 'PED' is?
