Just thought I would make an introductory post here...
My name is Chris. I am 23 years-old and live in Daytona Beach, FL. I just took up running a few days ago as a supplement to the diet I have been on. Back in high school I was very athletic playing soccer, hockey, and baseball. I was 6' tall and 175 pounds. Since I went off to college down here, no sports, plenty of parties, a girlfriend (now fiancee) I had packed on over 40 pounds. On May 2nd I weighed myself and I weighed 220 pounds! I decided enough was enough and since then have dropped back down to 185 pounds. The other night I went out for my first "real" run in I don't know how long. It was only about 1/2 mile but I thought I was going to have a heart attack! I USED to be able to do 3 miles in 20 minutes! I have no aspirations at this point of running a marathon, or any of that, I just want to get back in shape. Anyone have any tips for getting back in the swing of things? Well, I will be on here frequently now that I found the site thanks to Yahoo!

Hi Chris, if you are only just getting back into exercise its best to do just a few runs a week to start with, just jog a little and then walk a little and gradually build up your running time and cut down your walking time until you can hold runing for 3 miles +. As you get fitter you can increase the distance you run.

Welcome aboard, and nice turn around in the weight department. Shaun is right on as far as slowly building up. Focus on weight/nutrition and general fitness until running moderate distances every few days doesn't feel difficult. At that point, you'll be better suited to get specific with your training.

Thanks for the tips. It's just soooo humid here and hot. Running at night seems to be my only option as I am too lazy to get up early enough. Man, I didn't realize just how out of shape I am... |

Run when you feel you can get the most out of your body. As you get more fit, you'll find it easier to tackle the heat.

I agree with Dan and Shaun. Plus, I would go at it every other day for a couple of months and then increase to 2 days on, one day off. You could do some cross training on the day off. Double says to try to do something everyday, and that is good advice. Welcome to the site.

The only thing I would add to the advice given so far is to go to a specialty running store and make sure you are in good shoes that fit the particular mechanics of your stride and foot placement. If there is a Fleet Feet or Phidippedes (sp?) they are excellent running stores.
Welcome aboard!!

Ehh...I didn't know of anything like that and I just went out and picked up a pair of Nike Air Max Conquer's....they are very comfortable (at least to me). |

As long as you are not having any problems that is fine. Do you keep a mileage log? If so then look to replace those shoes somewhere after you get 300 miles on them. Then go to the running store and see what they recommend. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
