Let me help you with that, Dan. They are substituting the fall cross-country season mileage for the summer training. That means they are getting in 8 weeks of mileage before hitting the track for serious speedwork. That means they will do just as well on the track in the spring. It also means they will do less well in cross-country. My argument is not to say this is "sad" for the runner--a lot of guys just don't like the hills, the lack of fanfare, and all that mud; that's fine. It's sad for the sport of cross-country, though, being denied all that competition. My argument refutes your conclusion that just because some 800m specialists are mid-pack cc runners, that that means 50% aren't capable of being top cross-country runners. All distance runners (800m and up) are capable of being "good" further up the spectrum.
