After recovering from two injuries that kept me out of the loop all Winter, I entered my first competition for the year in a 10K in Stayton Oregon just 20 minutes away from Dan's house (10, if he's driving the Miata Cool ). It was an accurate, medium hard course with no really steep hills, but a few long rolling ones, 200-400m in length. Ran 43:18, first in my age division, and first time under 7:00 per mile for this long of race.

I thought about going out there to surprise Paul and cheer him on, but that 9am start time made me think twice. Didn't help that I didn't go to bed until nearly 4am... I think I woke up at 8:50, so I could've actually made it if the Miata registration were resolved. Wink Soon, hopefully... I'm headed down to Yreka Thursday to take care of stuff with DMV...

Probably didn't occur to you after 10 miles of running today, but you were only a stone's throw away from Silver Falls. Would've made for a nice 7 mile cool down.

Now Paul, we'll be expecting regular updates from you! Don't let us down.

Dan

Today, actually 7/10, I entered my first Half Marathon, a small race in Ridgefield, WA called the Half From Hell. The course was very hilly with many extended roller coaster-like sections. Less than 20 people were entered. I went out at a steady, but conservative pace, and kept what I thought was a steady pace throughout the race. Like an idiot, I left my sports watch at home. I'm just not in the habit of wearing it all the time, yet. I passed a couple of people at 2 miles and then ran completely by myself for the rest. I made sure I got water or Gatorade at all 4 aid stations. The race was at 8 in the morning. Weather was sometimes overcast and sometimes sunny. When the sun was out, I'm sure the temp was up past 70. Picked up the pace a bit at mile 11, at mile 12 had a bit of a cramping problem in my left hamstring, which, fortunately, subsided quickly. Finished strongly in 1:44.36. Had no real problems although my ankles, knees and hips were pretty achy. Felt like I could have gone faster, but I was definitely in uncharted territory here, and this was my longest outing since last October.

Great race Paul. Two things:

Thing one: You ran on a hilly course with no watch to gauge your pace with.

Thing two: Without other runners around you this was basically a time trial.

Add thing one and thing two together and you have a sub 1:40:00 half marathon waiting to be run. Very Happy
