|
The women have their marathon trials this Saturday in St Louis. Deena Kastor will be the favorite of course. After her, Collen Dereuck leads a group of six who have run between 2:30:00 and 2:33:00 so the next two slots could be any one of those or it could be a surprise. A potential surprise runner could be Heather Hanscom who ran a 2:37:00 at the Marine Corps marathon last Oct. It was her first marathon!!
From a personal pespective it will be very interesting to see the results. Two local runners are entered as well as one of The Daughter's high school teammates and two of her college teammates, Hanscom being one of those. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Do they just take the top three, or do they also have to make a certain qualifying time? |

Both (place and time requirements; not necessarily 3 get to go).

Ok, makes sense.
Canada always has really confusing methods for choosing olympic teams. There isn't really an "olympic trial" meet or anything (there is, but it's not that important) but you have to run the A standard within a certain amount of time, and then at least the B standard as the competition approaches, but that doesn't guaruntee you under some random condition because of something stupid etc etc.... I think I'm confusing myself even more. |

Canada is known for not sending people who are qualified, due to budget limitations.

There's a good chance Jeff Schiebler won't make the team... that basically means there isn't a single Canadian distance runner that the selection committee thinks is worth sending, with the exception of Bruce Deacon who somehow always goes for the marathon without making the standard
What's Deena Kastor's marathon PR? |

She qualified with a 2:21:16 but I am not sure if that is her PR or not. She is capable of winning a medal in Athens. It all depends on everyone's health and the weather conditions. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Deena is the American record holder...broke Joan's record in her last marathon...where, Micah, Chicago?? I forget.
We have a runner from Portland who will be competing. Qualified at the Las Vegas Marathon. No chance of making the team, but from personal experience, I can tell you that going to the Olympic Trials is ALWAYS a big deal. _________________ Paul

Does that mean you've known other people you went to them, or you've competed at the trials yourself? |

Competed in the Olympic Trials in 1984, almost made the Trials again in 1988. Weightlifting-100K class. _________________ Paul

And now he's a distance runner.

Probably one of the strongest distance runners in the civilized world!
But back to the trials. I wasn't surprised by any of the top three...just suprised that Derueck was in first. On the personal level Hanscom (college teammate of the daughter) took 6th and improved over 6 minutes from her first marathon. Turena Lane from Statesboro finished 20th but Michelle Lafluer of Savannah looks like she had a bad day and barely broke 3 hours.
The top three may be the strongest marathon team we have ever sent to the Olympics. Looking forward to seeing how they do. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I'll say, and given that Heather Hanscom is still fairly young, she could have a really good chance of making the team in 2008. |

She is one to keep an eye on. The trials was just her second marathon so who knows how much improvement she is capable of. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
