Hey guys, my name is Sara and I've been reading the boards for a while, and just decided to post.
I'm a freshman (soon to be sophomore) in college, and my friend and I have decided to run a marathon at the beginning of our junior year. I ran cross-country my first three years of high school, and spring track for my first two. However, I have not run for the past two years. My question is this: does anyone have suggestions as to how to get back into shape? I have access during the school year to a track and a full gym, and during the summer to a gym. My friend and I are planning to run 5 and 10k races next year to get back into running. I'd appreciate any advice, comments, suggestions on books or articles to read, or anything else! Thanks so much.

Hi Sara,
My approach, and especially so when preparing for something as purely endurance oriented as a marathon, is to start by simply running. You don't need to do anything specific, just get out there and work on building a solid cardiovascular base gradually. Treat the 5k's and 10k's as hard workouts at an uptempo pace, and all should be fine.
