Moving this thought from another thread ...
So just what is the 400 ??? Sprint or low level middle distance ??? Current World Record holder also hold 200 record ... Let's look at al time list:
43.18 Michael Johnson - 19.32
43.29 Butch REynolds - 20.42
43.50 Quincy Watts - 20.50 as a high schooler (20.0 relay at SC)
43.81 Danny Everrett - 20.09
43.86 Lee Evans - 20.5h
43.87 Steve Lewis - ??
43.97 Larry James - ??
Sub 44 seems to require speed ...
Fastest 800 runner over 400 - Alberto Juantorena 44.27/1:43.50 ... Moved up not down and used speed to burn off competition ..
44.27 Alberto Juantorena - 1:43.50
44.50 Mark Everrett - 1:43.20
44.5r David Mack - 1:43.35
Let the conversation begin ... |

I say long sprint without question. Your numbers illustrate quite well what is intuitive in nature. A world class 400 requires splitting the 200 in close to 21-flat (sometimes faster), which I dare say no mid-distance runner will be capable of. They would have to be well beyond maxing out midway just to remain close enough to even split and stay within camera distance at the end...

I've always considered the 400 a sprint. The reason is that I heard that 400 meters was the limit that a human could hold an all out sprint. It doesn't matter how much you train, you can only hold a sprint for approximatley 400 meters. Is that right or is it an old wive's tale? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Well I alwayas thought of 300 as the sprinting limit ... Partly because that's as far as I could sprint and becasue that is about as far as I've seen others hold a sprint ...
When you look at most 400 runners they split 21.x followed by 23/24 - roughly ... Or around mid ot high 21 followed by mid to high 22 for the better races ... So there is deterioration durring the race even among the world's best ...
The 400 is more about speed maintenance than any other race ... Over 800 you're looking more at 25/25/26/27 (running 1:43) ... Much less a "sprint" ...

I've always considered the 400 a sprint as well. The reason I think that way is because aerobic energy sources don't play a major part in the 400. Where as in the 800 and the 1500/mile they do provide a significant amount of the energy required to run those races. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

400 m is a sprint, and properly or M.J. - magic way run, you do not have to stop sprinting. However, it takes a great skill. You should go out all out or sprinting for the first 100 m. Within the second 100 m you should be near-sprinting, relaxing, trying at the very same time let the momentum build over the initial 100 m to carry you without slowing down too much. You should try to hammer the remaining 200 m. Because you saved some "legs" within the initial 200 m, you should be able to finish almost without the rigor mortis.
The above presented best--known way to run 400 m may help to explain a dichotomy:
1. very top speed due to "Tetna's effect": 10 m
2. very top speed due to alactic pathway: 3-7 seconds 30-70 meters
3. lactic pathway--anaerobic 300 m
4. (Look 3) 1000 m 50/50 split anaerobic and aerobic?
Dichotomy -- only seemingly. The 800/1000 m runners never max-out like the 400 m sprinters. |

When I say "max-out:" I mean that they never reach the very maximum speed. |

There's really no way to answer that question without knowing what level you're talking about. As Indeurr's response indicates, there's easily a 33% or more difference between some levels, and that doesn't even get down to junior high girls for whom 70 seconds would kill most of the competition...

definetly a sprint.
you open with the first 100m being a sprint, then "glide" the backstretch. and then you've got to sprint the last 200m. _________________ [word to your mother] |
