Can someone help me? We are thinking about having a trail run next year as a fundraiser for a mental health non-profit agency. If anyone has any experience with trail runs, I would appreciate your advice. I would also like runners thoughts on this idea.
Thanks, Rolling Eyes

What sort of advice are you looking for, and what specific considerations are you expecting for a trail run vs. a road run?

Make sure you have everyone sign a waiver.
Make sure you clean up all the water cups and gu people leave behind.
Mark the trail well so people don’t get lost.
Trail runs are usually smaller and the people don’t care so much about their times but don’t let that fool you. Trail runners are a competitive bunch.
Have bagels and some food afterward so people can talk to each other afterward. Trail runners seem more social after races.
I am not sure what other type of information you are looking to hear.

I've put on a couple of road races as fund raisers. First off you need to find a course, becareful often there is a charge for having a police officer there if your race crosses a road. Check with your local Parks and Rec. department for possible sights and any regulations you need to follow. Second you need a date. Get with local running clubs and running shoe/apparell stores to find out when the other races in your area are that way you don't conflict with an established race. Finally market the race. Go to other races and hand out flyers, put up flyers at local running shoe stores, health clubs and try to go to running club meetings to hand out flyers as well. Also putting ads in Runners World and/ or a Sunday paper is another good way to get the word out.

Hey Mac,

ST and DG coverd a lot of the fine points. I am impressed with ST's depth of knowledge of Trail Runner likes and dislikes, as well as social habits Surprised DG is on the money with the other stuff Smile

As Dan noted, I think we need a bit more information, such as where you are, what time of year are you planning the run, etc.

There is a very good trail run organizer here in SE PA. If that would be a help, shoot me a message. I ran all of his 5 - 30k trail races this year. Also you may want to talk to Dr. "Mad Mike". He is a big trail runner too, and has lots of info.

Let us know how you make out. If it is close enough...I'm there Very Happy Trail Running is my life Cool

How about a trail run in 30 degree temps, with ice and snow, rocks, roots, and mud Wink I just might do a road trip for that Exclamation

Dan, I went running this morning..check the weather channel for my area...raining ice here..roads and sidewalks are a sheet of ice Sad Ran 3 miles, limped home 2 miles..took a nasty fall on my right hip..black and blue Crying or Very sad Still had to come to work... Ain't life a blast Laughing

Remember that the WAIVER does not guard against everything. Make sure that your course is safe. Make arangements for a large # of participants even if you don't get a lot at pre-resisration.

I've had a few runs like that. Always a toss up between having a blast and wondering why anyone would put themselves through that willingly... Smile I remember walking into the weight room after one particularly frosty run and having someone comment that I had icicles hanging off of my eyelashes! I looked in the mirror and it was true. Surprised

RangerG, you'd love the adventure running series here in Oregon. BigRedLizard puts on a ton of them all over with natural barriers, the whole mud and muck shebang!!

Since college I've almost continually had some sort of beard or goatee (eccept when I had my picutre taken for the photo of me for the team website) and one of my favorite things to do is get up early on cold mornings and go for runs. I love to finsish a run and walk by a window and see ice hanging from my beard. Last year I got to run in -20 degree's for the first time, that was something. In temps like that there is no way your run slow, you have to be working your tail off just to stay warm. It was awesome.
