Looked up the results for the rethymno meet and noticed Gay clocked a 9.88 with a max allowable wind. This takes him to third in the all-time 100/200 combined times. However johnsons bests of 10.08 and 19.32 are not strictly applicable to this category as he was a 200/400 specialist as his 100m time reflects.
Anyway, a great follow up to his 19.70 run. A run that pulled carter along to that sensational time. Credit to gay as he ran that race virtually alone and probably didn't notice carters presence until the last 20 or 30 metres.
With all the media attention on Gatlin , Powell , Wariner and Carter and quite deservedly so it seems Gay is lurking in the shadows to possibly hit the big time in the coming years. I certainly hope that is the case as he is such a talent it would be sad if he turned out to be the nearly man in the course of his career.
Other notable runs in that meet including Michelle Perry running a legal 12.49 and Torri edwards a slightly windy 10.86. |

This group of young guys is phenomenol right now. I thought Gatlin had set the curve for years to come, but the batch right behind him has something big to say about it.

Absolutely, it seems we are spoilt for choice in so many events from the sprints and the mens and womens high hurdles.
The womens 100m looks good too with jones resurgence and sherone simpson as well as a good group of others.
The 200 however is a dream race. I would love to see all the protagonists in say zurich. With the likes of gay, carter, spearmon , bolt and throw in powell and hopefully a fit gatlin into the mix and who knows what's possible. |

Tyson is awesome - that 9.88 was the best example of somone taking full advantage of the conditions and letting rip. I think he could definitely match that time with a lesser wind; but I am impressed with his finishing speed which has gone somewhat unnoticed when he is behind the likes of Gatlin & Powell. Watch him in the NYC Race [Gat 9.87], US Nat'Ls Final & Rome last week [his RT was 0.212 !] - his final 30-40m are just fantastic
If he ever got a really good start [ie; Powell in Gateshead] he could well pressure Powell in the latter stages of the race _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

I've been touting Gay all season ... 9.88/19.70 is spectacular, and he's still a kid !!!!
A friend that was at the meet yesterday told me that Gay held his own up through 80 ... Then got excited and tried to make a move when he should've just relaxed ... That is where he lost it ... I don't think that will happen next time ...
This is a great group of youngsters ... Gatlin was just the first of many ... Carter, Gay, Speramon ... And we still have folk like Dix waiting to mature ... Demi Omole Travis Padgett will make noise too ... I liked what I saw of them at NCAA's ...
Osaka, Bejing and Berlin are going to be VERY exciting !!! _________________ Conway

I have liked Gay for a while but I always thought of him as more a 200M runner - this certainly soldifies him as a threat in the 100 as well - think of him running the turn on the 4x100 as well... _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

Any chance Greene can get healthy and earn a spot on that squad? It would be cool to see the old goat leading the young pups to something special.

I could be entirely wrong, here, but one thing I like about this new group of sprinters is that they don't seem to be ducking each other like the last generation did. _________________ Paul

It seems like they all came on so fast, none of them are used to being the guy everyone's targeting, so they still act like the underdogs, out to prove themselves at every opportunity.

Not sure I remember the last generation ducking that much as a whole ...
I thought MJ ducked a lot in the 200 after '96 ...
Frankie got hurt after '98 and missed a lot of meets both big and small ...
Bailey spent most of the time hurt after '97 ...
Surin was hurt most of the time after '99 ...
Ato was hurt in '99 then again in '01 and was pretty much done after that ...
Tim stayed healthy and competed regularly ...
Mo is about the only one that constantly competed and he was hurt at the end of '01 and then again at the end of '03 ...
I think the big guns were willing to compete, was just hard gettin em to the track in one piece !!!! LOL ...
The current group has been a competitive bunch ... This season being the only difference with Gat and Asafa looking for a "showdown" race early on ... But they have not met much the last couple seasons due to injury as well ... Last year Powell ... This year Gatlin ...
And the new new guns are still getting their feet wet, so they have to compete to gain their reputations ... _________________ Conway

The trend for top athletes to avoid each other on the circuit seems much less than the eighties and nineties when it reached it's peak.
Right now the greatest rivalry in track is Gatlin and Powell and it is hard to say whether they would be willing to meet on a regular basis until Gatlin is back from injury.
The desire to cement their reputation may come into play eventually as they realise the financial stakes if one is overshadowed by the other.
It is one of the biggest dissapointments of the season in not having the chance to see this great rivalry unfold.
Can you think of the last time when two 100m sprinters were so good it would be virtually impossible to pick a winner. The nineties saw a number of top sprinters but never really two dominant in the same year . I would say Lewis and Burrell in 1991 was close and before that it was all lewis in the eighties apart from the Johnson days but they don,t really count.
Boldon seemed the man in 1997 but Mo put the matter to a rest with the grand finale.
1996 was tough and the Olympic final was hard to call with Frederick looking so good but Boldon always a threat and Bailey who although lacked the times was still the current world champion.
But Gatlin and Powell have really taken this rivalry to another level and the speculation is intense especially since they are not racing each other.
However Gatlin still has the nod as the Big stage performer . |

I wouldn't say that you can't count Carl and Ben's rivalry ... It did HAPPEN !!! LOL ... Granted Ben ended up testing positive, but so did Carl we've found out in retrospect - just never banned ...
Either way the rivalry did occur ... And, when you say Carl dominated the 80's it was only 81, 82, 83, 84 (not that that wasn't long enough) ... But '85 and 86 Ben was undefeated and an equal (if not greater force) to Lewis ... Ben was actually superior on the clock during that time frame ... Then of course came the big races in '87 and '88 - both of which went to Ben ... So Ben had as dominant a period during the 80's as Carl did - they are just often forgotten or folk pretend like they didn't happen ...
And I would disagree that Powell and Gatlin have taken the rivalry to another level - cause the rivalry has really been on paper !!!! LOL ... When Gatlin won in '04 they were not rivals yet per se !!! Then last year Powell spent most of the season on the shelf ... This year was to be the start of the rivalry, but it has yet to get off the ground !!!! Gotta race to have a rivalry !!!! _________________ Conway

I felt The eighties belonged to Lewis on the basis of Johnsons drug fuelled career. As for Lewis taking drugs, Well I would be Naive to say it is impossible but at the same time there has been no conclusive proof. If we look at his career span there are no spikes in his performance that would seem suspicous. He was quite constant throughout his career when taking into account injuries that are inevitable during the course of anyones career.
I would give him the benefit of the doubt. He was endowed with a great physique and immense talent that I feel his performances were genuine. Nothing really suggests that he would have had to take drugs. Great as his performances were such as his 9.86 and 8.87m jump it was the cumulation of performances at close to that level over the past decade.
He didn't come out with something out of this world like a 19.32 by MJ or 10.49 by Flo-Jo. A bad example maybe as I feel MJ was genuine and Flo-Jo was definetly not.
To site another example, Nehemiah running 12.91 was well beyond his time but he was just a great athlete.
As for Powell and Gatlin , I agree this would have been the big year but it has been brewing since the olympics and became apparent last year.
The rivaly is on paper but their has to be a reason to being on paper. Two co-record holders who can churn out sub 9.9 times as if it was just another day in the office.
Just as coe and ovett were great rivals breaking record after record but never raced each other until the olympics. They were still rivals. |
