Has any one seen statistics on the height and weight of (just picking a cut off here) sub 1:45 800m. runners?

i know DK gives a link to a good 800m. sight, but i have not checked it thoroughly.

i am interested in investigating correlations between the size of an athlete and performance in this event.

Feel free to discuss the current world leaders in this respect, as well as the crop of US athletes; i.e. how big is Brandon Rock compared to Rich Kenah and who has the best mark?

later,

Chris McLean

Wow, those could be some tough stats to find! I don't recall seeing anything off-hand, but I bet someone's looked into it. Smile

If you like, swing by my new Running Links database. It's not linked up to my site yet (still working out some design issues), but it's much more complete than the current running links section, and has, I believe, 23 links to statistical resources (413 total links and growing). One of those might lead to an answer of your question.

Dan

p.s. I've met Brandon Rock, and he's a big guy! It's been a couple of years, but 6'3" seems to stick in my memory, and a fairly solid build.

Here's another one -- Bryan Woodward, 6'3", 185 pounds.

From a Runner's World Online interview, "I don't even consider it, really. When I'm really heavy is when I feel strongest, actually--during indoor season, for example. There are plenty of "big" runners out there. I just train according to what I need to do. Honestly, I haven't even hopped on a scale in the past nine months."

Chris:

I don't know about the 800 meter guys, but I have looked into the height & weight numbers for the 1500, 5000, 10,000 and marathon kind of US runners.

Here's a few:

Rod DeHaven: 5'8" 130
Richie Boulet: 5'10" 135
Keith Brantley: 5'10" 142
Mark Croghan: 5'9" 132
Marc Davis: 6'1" 150
Alan Culpepper: 6'1" 130
Adam Goucher: 5'10" 138
Steve Holman: 6'1" 152
Bob Kennedy: 6'0" 146
Jerry Lawson: 6'0" 153
James Menon: 5'8" 135
Rueben Reina: 5'7" 126
Dan Browne: 5'10" 145

Keep in mind that the African distance runners are basically genetic freaks from the standpoint of North Americans. Long legs relative to their torso, short, and very thin. You can train as hard as you want, but you can't change your body proportions in those manners.

Here's some reading on the subject.
