I'm a new runner (jogger really, but I'm aiming to be runner someday!), and I have a problem I can't seem to find a solution for. Whenever I run, be it indoors or outdoors, immediately after I finish I get extreme allergy-like symptoms that go on for hours, often a full day afterwards. Sneezing, a constant runny nose, watery eyes. It's like getting hit with an extreme head cold. I love the way running feels. But every time I push myself, I get these symptoms. Has anyone heard of this? I went to my doctor, and they just switched my hayfever medication (which I take daily as maintenance for mild hayfever- mainly sinus headaches) and gave me a cortosteroid nasal inhaler, but it didn't help. I have taken tons of antihistimines, and they don't make a dent in it. I am admittedly not in great shape, but I'm trying to get there. Is my body really "allergic" to running? Will I move beyond this as I get in better shape? Thanks. Evelyn

Hmm, what region do you live in? Is this something that happens seasonly or all the time? It certainly sounds like allergies, possibly combined with exercise induced asthma or something. It's a long shot, but have you tried hydrating very heavily after running?

I live in Boston. I'm not sure if it's seasonal. I do get the urge to try running around this time of year, with Spring just around the corner. But it's not hayfever season yet here. It's still winter really, and there is no pollen count. This happened yesterday after running on an indoor track at my gym. And it has happened before, both indoors and out. I'll try hydrating more. It's so frustrating, because whenever I feel like I make some progress with my distance and aerobic capacity, I get sick afterwards. Thanks for your help.

Evelyn
