My athletes have been very happy with the Saucony Kilkenny's (sp?), Nike Waffle variations, and to a lesser degree, the Brooks who's name escapes me. Most people here get the ones with replaceable spikes. That gives you the flexibility of traction for muddy/slippery courses and putting blanks in for hard/pavement ones. They usually only cost $5 more than the rubber nub version of the same shoe.

The nice thing about a XC spike is it makes for a great track trainer later in the year, being a soft outsole that doesn't pound you on intervals as much as a true track spike.

Pound you on intervals? If you're doing intervals then you're basically training, not racing. So why would you use XC spikes for training? I don't even use my track spikes for training either.

Personal preference. Lots of people like to be in racing flats of some sort for their workouts.

I think you know what I mean though. Sure grass reduces the impact on the legs a lot more than running on asphalt (road) or on rubber (track) but XC spikes are indirectly the same as track spikes. Lightweight, fragile, and built for racing. That's why I think that normal running shoes such as ASICS would be better. I mean the only times people should run with spikes is when they race or when they break them in before a race.

Thats your opinion. I always wear spikes when i do interval training on the track. I just feel more comfortable running fast in light weight shoes. I extremely dislike doing any interval under a mile in regular trainers. My feet feel heavy and sluggish.

"Indirectly" doesn't much interest me. Wink XC spikes are essentially the same as a road flat, just with the option of adding spikes for better traction. And if road flats can be worn for 26 miles, I'm pretty sure XC spikes are better suited to track workouts than track spikes.

It's not really an opinion because it's a matter of how they're built. My spikes wore out pretty fast after a few time trials. The plastic has dulled a lot. Track spikes also leave you open to injury. The impact is a lot greater compared to trainers. When you look at it, they only have about a centimeter of cushioning. No one really uses track spikes for training lol. I didn't see anyone on the track team use them and from seeing photos of Hicham's training, he wasn't using them either on a set of 300s. Try running 4x2000 with track spikes and you'll see how bad your legs will hurt the next day.

Oh and Dan, why would you have XC spikes for 26 miles if you're only running 5K-10K? That's like me using Nike Zoom Marathoners to run the mile.

No its an opinion... Most of my friends i train with use spikes when we do interval training. Including a friend of mine who was top 10 in the state in the mile. In fact i never saw him do intervals w/o his spikes on, and that included a repeat mile session and a 4 mile tempo on the track w/ his XC spikes on.

I wore my track spikes all year to do interval training and i didnt suffer any injuries other then a nasty blister which i got becuase my socks werent thick enough to cushin the back of my heel. So i dont think wearing track spikes leaves you open to injury.

Trust me, it is not an opinion. There is a reason why some shoes are called trainers and just because you ch run up to 26 miles in xc spikes, that doesn't mean they'll last. Spikes are made for racing, it doesn't matter who you are or how good of a runner you are. I have ran with spikes before and the impact is far greater than that of my ASICS. All they have is 1 cm of cushioning at the heel for the mile and about 5 mm at the front portion. That plastic plate only lasts for a little bit. Training with spikes gets just as silly as running the mile in 100m spikes. What's even more silly is getting injured for training with spikes. I can understand the stress from the training, but spikes will definitely earn you shin splints. There is no way that you can run with spikes everyday Monday-Friday for the whole season.

I've read articles and even my own physician said that I have to change my trainers every 3 months. Spikes wouldn't last for more than 2 weeks like that. The spikes have pretty much dulled even after about 4 time trials. It's alsothe mileage that matters. Spikes can't last for even 30 miles let's say for just a week. So if the season lasts 3 months, then you ran 360 miles with track spikes. Lol I won't even mention using the same pair of spikes but if you were switching them, that would mean about $600 down the drain.

XC spikes don't have the plastic spike plate... I'm assuming from your comments that you've never worn or seen XC spikes, so you really ought not to be forcing your opinion on others like it's fact.

I dont wear them everyday... Just during track workouts which during track season is usually only once or twice a week.

And were talking about doing track workouts in XC spikes which usually have more cushining and more support then track spikes. So your whole last post has almost no point to it.

I found the spikes im going to buy, asics gel dirt dog. They're last years model but i dont really like the new model, almost an oz heavier and i like the feel and wear of a light shoe. Heres the link to them,

Dan, I was referring to track spikes because the plastic plate on mines has pretty much dulled out. As long as XC spikes won't injure anyone, then it's fine in reality. Although theoretically, they're really not made for running with on the track. Besides, trainers do offer more cushioning wehter they're heavier or not.
