There is a girl on my xc team that has been having a lot of pain in her quad area, but it streches from the outside right below the hip to down right above the knee, and it is just one place at a time, not all at once. It's not like a pull or anything, b/c it's just a gradual thing (maybe overuse?) and it varies in pain from day to day. does anyone have suggestions to what it could be or what needs done?

It sounds like what is normally attributed to IT-band (illiotibial tendon - sp?) tightness, which is actually more accurately muscle tightness (I don't remember the name of the muscle). Deep massage and stretching can go a long ways toward alleviating this. You can massage your own quads pretty well with your elbows, while in a sitting position with your legs slightly bent.
