Why ??? He's gonna rule the 400 and be a player in the deuce ... What does he have to gain by moving up to the 800 ??? If he moved up he'd be expected to run at least 1:43 and I'm sure there would be those clammoring for 1:42's - or faster ...

If I were his coach I'd leave him where he is ...

I long wanted to see MJ try the 800, but the precedent has been set for that camp avoiding any such temptations. I doubt Wariner will be any different.

They are two very different events, and in the North America and the Caribbean, 800 m is approached and tends to be considered to be more of a sprint event. Therefore, your wish does not surprise me, but 800 m is not a sprint like 200 meters or 400 meters events.
I bet that these men would have a problem running anything above 600 meters. Most of these guys probably run very few 1 K's, except for the pre--season, and they probably cannot recall when was the last time that they run over 2 miles.
The 100 and 200 m specialists need only a little speed endurance, the 400 m runners need a lot of the speed endurance and a very little running endurance, but the 800 m specialists need a pretty decent VO2 Max in addition to pretty good speed endurance.
With the US even specific preparation most US dashers who specialize in 100 or 200 meters would have a problem beating an average high school J.V. runner in any event over 1000 meters (about two—thirds of a mile). The 400 m runners should do OK in the 800 m event because of their preparation for the last 100 meters of the 400 m race, but they also should not be able to beat a J.V. high school runner in any event above 1 mile.
All I am trying to say – they re very different events using different muscle types, and different energy systems.
nota bene:
Most US coaches believe that if the sprinter (100 or 200 meter specialist, not 400 m specialist) runs any distance above 1 K often, he or she will get slower; the warm up distance is usually 800 meters or about half-a-mile.

I guess I view Wariner as having a much different physique than we are used to seeing in our 400m runners. Slighter than Juantorena. So is he a great 400m runner who could hold speed for 800m and is capable of a very fast 200m, or is he the standard 200 - 400 prototype.

I agree with Paul. Wariner's got a build that could easily carry over to the 800. MJ started his career with a similar physique but really bulked up when he focused on the 200.

Maybe Hart scared him by saying if he didn't get his 200m down to 20.3 , he was going to make an 800m runner out of him. Laughing

You are making a very good argument, but it is not necessarily the appearance, but what is under the hood, so to speak, that really counts. From the appearance, he seems to be a 400-800 m prototype, but, once again, it is the internal physiology that decides that.

Stuggle ??? What struggle ??? top FIVE this year baby !!!!!

And I'd say that Wariner is more a 200/400 type ... He has great speed ... His 200 PR is not what it could be simply because he has run it sparingly since high school ...

Well that just leaves 4 more places for me! hahahaha

I would love to see Warriner give the 800 a go - I think his leanness looks to be a great asset in the longer race.

I keep getting close to putting the lists together, then putting it off again... I need to get rolling on it soon, but man have I been swamped with crazy team stuff.

Dan -- this year, you should put your team together first, and decide on the events to be included based on your own team Wink

That won't help him !!! Wink ... I think perhaps he should wait and see how a few others structure their teams first ... Then put together his team ...
