I don't know if any of you have seen the 5000 meters movie or followed Goucher's career very close lately, but at the Victoria International Track Classic on Friday he pulled off a 13:21.13 beating the US A standard for world champs of 13:21.50. It was a great race to watch. There were two rabbits that brought him through 3200m a little slow, but he picked it up from there and closed with a 60 second last 400m. It was like watching a continuation of the movie. Very exciting, and good to see something go well for him.

Goucher has had some injury problems so it is very good to see something going right for him. I hope he makes the team for the worlds.

I've watched him race in person the past couple weeks and am quite surprised by that 5k time. He didn't look like he was in anywhere near that kind of form.

I heard about this last night and was honestly surprised by it - happy for Goucher of course but surprised it did not look like any of his results were leading up to this so soon...

Yeah, they interviewed him afterward and he said that he wasn't even going for the standard in that race, but just trying to work his way a little closer, so he just ran his race and when he got to 4600m in 12:21 he decided to go for it.

I saw him run a couple indoor races in January that indicated he'd be in good form for the summer, but I didn't follow any of the happenings between then and last Friday.

His legs have looked very heavy and slow the past couple races, but maybe that was just an indication of a high training load (i.e. fatigued) and not that he was as far off as we were all thinking.
