I was impressed with Merritt's double, also. There will be no slacking off for anyone after an Olympic year. Wariner will have his work cut out for him as he adjusts to the pro ranks.

I don't see any letting up this year - post Olympic or not ... Matter of fact I think this season will be tougher and deeper than last season ... We had a down sprint year in '03 but I don't think we will see anything like that again for a while ... I'm guessing we see a lot of ramping up between now and Beijing with Beijing seeing more WRs than we've seen in quite some time ...

From the t-and-f list:

Quote:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina freshman track athlete LaShawn Merritt,
who ran the third-fastest indoor 400 meter time in world history of 44.93
seconds at the Powered by Tyson Invitational less than a month ago, has
officially confirmed that he has signed a professional contract with Nike.

From what I've read on various other forums & message boards Merritt has just signed a lucrative contract with NIKE. He has also got a one year bonus of $100,000! Any comments?

Not too shabby, but I guess they feel he won't sell as much merchandise as Webb...

He was presumably getting $15k or so annually in free schooling, so that has to be factored into the equation.

I talked with a friend of mine earlier who told me that Merritt did go pro, but not at the amount given ... He did get the bonus but is not getting $400,000 a year ... I am not at liberty to say how much but it is 6 figures ....

There has been a lot of talk about why he didn't wait until after NC's ... According to my source he was going to wait, butr Adidas came in with an offer and there was pressure to get a deal done and get him signed ... And there may be others soon ...

Bit of a push to get the young talent under contract?

Not sure what the deal is ... Not like there is a dearth of "older" talent ... Granted Merritt seems like he could be a special talent, but personally I would want to see what this kid is going to do outdoors ... But that's just me ...

Could be a good sign for the sport though ... It at least shows that the big shoe companies are willing to spend some money on the talent ... Just wish they would figure out how to distribute it more equitably so as to benefit the sport better ...

An influx of sponsorship dollars would seem to be a good thing, but it does appear to be a bit scatter shot.

True but as stated it is nice to see that sort of money being talked about with runners!

I have been amazed at just all of a suddden how things have changed it first went with the whole Webb controversy - got a lot of ink and then looked to be panning out last year... Others following suit now I truely hope that it pays off well and we can see more of an influx of talent... Can we see some more over on the Distance side too!!! Wink hehe

Let's just hope we don't get a wave of these youngsters not panning out (as often is the case with top tier sprint talent, historically), as that might cause a knee jerk reaction for the worse.
