How 'bout that Galen Rupp kid in the 50th anniversary (Bannister) mile last night? 4:01, if I'm not mistaken, with my old jr. high bud on pacing details (from what I could tell on TV). They ran it on the track out at the Nike campus, which makes for lots of laps.

Funny thing is, I've only seen Rupp run once, and that was the Jr. World Championships last summer. At least, I thought I had seen him run... Turns out the guy the commentators said was Rupp was someone totally different. I thought he was a wiry little black kid with braids, not a scrawny white kid with a mop. He looks less impressive than I expected. Neutral

Webb was the last. That Texas kid (Steve Magness, I think) came close, but not quite. I assume Rupp will be running at Pre, but I wouldn't say it's a certainty he'll run the mile. After that, he probably won't have many opportunities to hit the sub-4 unless HS allows times through the summer (?).

The event wasn't advertised at all, making for a very select, intimate spectating group. The track is the Michael Johnson track and is a full 400m track with only 5-6 lanes. It is cut out of a forested area. For instance, you can't see the backstretch from the homestretch. I've run on it before, its a nice surface. It also has longer curves than straightaways, and is well marked.

I forgot about you mentioning before it's a full 400m track, and I couldn't believe that was right last time... It feels like 300m at the most, although I've only been on it once. Neutral

The picture in the Oregonian shows Rupp greating fans on the backstretch, where the track faces the road. There are only five lanes, and no field event areas. Its interesting how small a track looks when you take out the outer most lanes.

Bonus for me: Duniway has been re-lined, so it actually looks like a track now instead of a solid 8 lane glob of rubber asphalt.

You'll have to start running straight now. Smile

13:55 and 4:01 in one week! Surprised

I saw him run at the XC State Meet this year and he just dominated (14:55 to about 15:13). I would expect him to run the 5k at Pre this year, but we'll see. It's sick to think that someone just a year older than myself is running those times.

13:55 or 14:55?

It's even harder for me to believe that someone who is my age runs those times Smile

I'm not sure which race that would've been (Stanford?), but I know Rupp is a lot faster than 14:55. 13:55 seems reasonable on a very, very good day.

Yep, 13:55 at the Cardinal Invitational. He won the "B" heat and moved just behind Pre in the all-time HS 5k list. Here's a link that mentions it and also has a few pics of the Nike track.

13:55 at Stanford in the 2nd race, 5K. Will is probably referring to the XC in 14:55.

Okay, that's what I thought... just wasn't sure if it was a typo. 4:01 and 14:55 don't really match up anyways Smile

Rupp had quite the negative split in the race. His last 880 yards was well under 1:58. Dan, has he committed to a school, yet?? I find it interesting that McGrath has not broken 1:50 this year. Chapa, I think, actually has a better time, or very close, at Stanford. Rupp is also a superb student, from what I hear.

My friend met him at the Oregon invite a few weeks ago and said that he's not planning on going anywhere, just wants to run professionally. May not be correct though.
