Excellent, thanks!

Quote:
There will be 12 Golden League events in 2003, 6 each for men and women:

Men: 100m, 800m, 3000/5000m, 110 Hurdles, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw

Women: 100m, 800m, 1500m, 400 Hurdles, High Jump, Triple Jump

That fills in the main gap for progressing forward with setting up this year's league. Assigning consistent points to the throwing events proved difficult last year (I don't recall off hand if it was all of them or just some), so the men's Jav is likely out. The other 5 men's events are all workable, but I'll have to think what to do about that combo 3k/5k GL status...

On the women's side, I think we're good on all 6 from a scoring standpoint. Probably drop the TJ and have an even 5 and 5 for 10 events total. The women's HJ was a bit weak of an event in last year's league, though.

Anyone surprised the women's 400 didn't get GL status this year?

What is the provisional gun-shot date?

I think that question has been answered a few times now... Wink

I am surprised that both the men and women only get one sprint ... I would have thought the 200 for the men and the 400 for the women would have been excellent ... What with Gatlin and Capel and Fredericks among others ... And then Guevara, the new and improved Collins, returning Katherine Merry, always tough Breuer, et al ... I keep saying that the IAAF is out to kill the sport ...

Don't forget the potential return of Freeman and Perec in that list... The men's 200m omission doesn't really surprise me, seeing as how the IAAF has practically pretended it doesn't exist since '96. Sad

The GL events look pretty evenly dispersed across disciplinesk just limited in number. Probably part of the master plan to shorten meets... Neutral

But this would have been the perfect season to try to revive the 200 !!! And I agree that they seem to have a master plan to shorten meets ... Although who gives them the right to A. Do so and B. Decide what gets eliminated ???

Unfortunately, I think they've given themselves that right, and I'm not aware of input or feedback having been solicited from outside sources. Confused

Conway, forgive me for reading between the lines...but were you a 200 runner? If so then it is doubly bad that they are eliminating that race. It would have to be tough not to have your event to watch. Sad

I think Conway and Justin are the ultimate sprinters on this website, with Conway at 21 flat plus or minus in the 200, and 10.5 ? plus or minus in the 100, if I'm recalling some of the past posts correctly.

Looking at the list again, an equally surprising omission is the men's 1500m. Are the powers that be possibly getting tired of rabbitted time trials and questionable pacing assistance in championship meets?

I've spent the morning overhauling the code from last year's contest to get everything up to date and to allow for this year's contest to be set up without overwriting all of last year's data (so old results can be viewed). Still got a ways to go, but it's getting close to where I can actually begin troubleshooting and setting up this year's meet/event/athlete info (which is another huge process). This stuff is very time consuming, and that doesn't even take into account the possibility of changing some aspects of the contest for this year. So please, no one ask me when the contest will begin or I might rip out what little hair I have and order a hit on you... Mad

Looking back through last year's mega-thread (yes, my head now aches), some of the setup stuff is starting to come back to me...

The men's Javelin is one of this year's GL events, but it proved very sketchy for bonus point calculations in last year's testing.

The men's 3k/5k combo still have me befuddled as to how to handle that sort of thing... Can we come up with a good conversion to treat the two events as one prior to assigning bonus points for time?

I don't believe I have any calculations for the women's 400h or Triple Jump, and as I recall from last year, non-flat running events (excludes the Purdy tables) could only be calculated by the decathlon/heptathlon tables, which neither of those is part of.

That leaves us with definitely doable 8 events, 4 for men and 4 for women, with the added possibility of the men's 3k/5k. If we then wanted to risk adding a non-GL event to even things out, we could add the women's 400, which would shock me if the IAAF lacks foresight enough to curtail.

Thoughts? Eight events would be less data for me to enter each week... Wink

Dan, I take the same position that I always have. The only reason we have a fantasy league is because you take the time and effort to make it happen. Since the 1500 is out for the men I would love to see a solution to the 3k/5k conundrum...but the bottom line is for you to construct this thing in the way that doesn't cause you any more headaches than you are willing to put up with.

Everyone will then have to be content to play by your rules or not play at all. Razz

But whatever the rules expect The Fighting Warthogs to be there. Exclamation Exclamation

If we can decide on a decent conversion ahead of time for the 3k/5k combo, then it won't be too big of a deal to convert one to the other prior to entering the results for each meet. I assume no meet will ever have both of them...

Of course, the easiest thing would be to just use the Purdy equivalent performance calculations I've already got set up:

http://run-down.com/statistics/calc.php

For events that are close in distance, the conversion should be pretty good there, and that saves me having to manually convert each one. I'll just have to decide whether to convert 3k's to 5k's or 5k's to 3k's, plus how to reflect that combo in the event name for roster selection without throwing off the event distance-based bonus point calculations...
