15 miles a week seems quite low, unless you are not counting your warmups and cooldowns. Maybe you are just getting acclimated to the 30-40 mpw regimen. But it seems that runners of your caliber are putting in mor like 50-65 mpw. However, I realize now that you are running in the under 20 group and it will take some time to build up to that.

Regina Jacobs broke the world indoor record at 1500 this weekend:

http://www.letsrun.com/2003/adidasbresults.php

Some other good action as well...but Jacobs--I don't know what to think. Is she really the first ever to be sub-2:00 (800) sub-4:00 (1500) and sub 15:00 (5000)?

Of course there are always allegations of drugs (c'mon she's 39 years old right?)...and questions of why she runs so fast at the wrong time of the year. I should find her inspirational, hard work and experience paying off with outstanding performances...but I find myself more often than not just shaking my head.

I have a similar response to her, usually. She's among the most entertaining in the sport to watch compete, is always a joy at meets and in interviews, and has done things no one else has managed, but... There are always too many question marks surrounding her to not throw in the "but..." Confused

Forget the drug accusations and running well at strange times of the year. I simply don't like her. The biggest reason being her stiffing of the world cross team last year. If you make a national team and are healthy then you have to run. She used the excuse that she was working on her barrier technique for track. As far as I know she still hasn't run a steeple and it's been two or three months. Anyone who can't take one week to go and represent their country at a world championship for the reason she gave makes me sick. And of coarse to top it all off most of her would have been teammates feel they would have won the world cross country championship had it not been for her snub.

On the upside I got to watch the meet at a bar so the sound was off. Which ment I didn't have to listen to Carol Lewis Smile

I know I hinted at it in the forums, but maybe I didn't come out and say it... I have it on pretty good authority that Jacobs was on a one month suspension last winter for refusing to take a drug test at XC Nats. That probably would have precluded her from competing at Worlds, so the steeple training explanation may have just been a PR cover.

In the end, it all comes back to drugs. Wink

I'm in agreement with coachd and Dan concerning Jacobs. She did perform quite well at the 2001 USATF's taking 1st, 1st, and 2nd; all tactical races but well run none the less. I was also put off by her refusal to run in the World XC's. But after Dan mentioned the drug bit at Mon's workout (we put in 6.5 miles) I started wondering if Suzy Favor-Hamilton's remarks last year were as much motivated with the chance that Jacobs might undergo drug testing at the international level, get caught, and effectively end her career.

Goodness I hate all these drug rumors. If she was suspended then I would hope whoever suspended her would anounce it publicly. And 1 month seems terribly short for a suspension for refusing a drug test. If I'm not mistaken 5 time world X-C champ John Ngugy lost at least 2 years for rufusing a drug test. Which was more based on a language barrier than anything else (if my memory is correct which it might not be here).

I agree fully. The way I heard it, it was basically a slap on the wrist by USATF designed to save face for everyone. The unannounced suspension was in December, when there weren't even any meets to be missed! I probably don't need to repeat why I'm so un-enamored with the drug testing system...

If I remember what I learned from watching The Kirate Kid it goes

"Right side of road OK... Left side of road OK... middle of road, squish just like grape"

The USATF (and IAAF for that matter) needs to pick a side of the road. Either enforce the drug rules to the hilt or forget about them all together. But a one month suspension is BS.

___Stop talking trash about my favorite miler in the US and around the world Laughing . When it comes to the North American women milers she is the only non pushover. She knows how to push back, and how to stay in the middle of the pack without tripping over other people. In short what I like about her the most is her toughness.
___I believe that she and my second favorite miler, Lidia Chojecka-Okninska from Poland, will medal in B'gham. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I've said for years that I find Jacobs to be one of the most entertaining runners to watch -- no argument there. When she's in the race, it's unlikely it will be anything but exciting. There's just too much side stuff that she's done nothing to dispell ... and I'm not one to bury my head in the sand and ignore the hypocricy when it's staring me in the face... Neutral

___Or perhaps, she feels innocent, and believes that she has nothing to explain. I know how naive the before-mentioned possibility of true innocents must appear. However, so far she has never been caught as far as I know. It is not to say that I am not suspicious myself.

She may well feel innocent, but it's highly unlikely she truly beileves she has nothing to explain, given the amount of heat she's received.

___Was she part of the Cover-up (e.g. C.J. Hunter)?

You mean the alleged US team members who tested positive prior to Sydney? Not that I know of. I've actually heard nothing of her name connected to that, surprisingly.
