I believe a large Kenyan contingent regularly calls Albuquerque home?

As I understand it, running at altitude has some physiological effect that tends to slow down the rate of movement, so I'm not sure the lung-boosting aerobic effect is enough to counter that for sprinters (where rate of movement is absolutely essential to training).

Micah- Tony Sandoval is from Los Alamos, NM. His daughter is running XC and track for their team right now. She is #4 on thier team. My #1 beat her the last time they raced.

Dan- there are a lot of foreign distance runners living in Albuquerque. DG would know more about that though as he lived in Alb. the year before moving to Nebraska. But I believe it was the site of the Italian distance team for a while as well.

I had never heard that there was an advantage to sprinting at altitude.

I'm pretty sure the slowing effects only apply to aerobic type training. The only way I could see that affecting sprinters is they might need to extend the recovery time in between reps during workouts other than that it should be fine.

There are more Kenyans in Albuquerque than you can shake a stick at. And if there is so much as a $20 prize at a local 5k road race you'd better be ready to go well below 14:30 if you want to try to win it.

As for the Italians they were staying at what I beleive is called "The High Altitude Training Center" or something along those lines. Some European guy baught a really big house and international groups and athletes pay to stay with him and use his house as a training base, the house just happened to be about a mile from my old gym so I got to see all the wieghts, plyo's and that type of training these groups did. Believe it or not the Italians played about 2 hours of basketball three times a week. There was also a contingent from Korea, that included the runner who won Boston a year or two ago (and who's name escapes me at the moment). There were also, kenyans, Germans and a few others.

I haven't run in any races that Sandoval was in but if he is still running he probably runs marathons and 1/2's and I usually run 5ks and 10ks. If I see him or his name in results I will let you know.
