As posted in RunBlogRun, following the London Olympics:

Quote:
NAIROBI (KEN): Starafrica.com informs that the Government and Athletics Kenya (AK) have been asked to put in place measures of restricting foreign athletes training in Kenya. Team Kenya athletics head coach Julius Kirwa said this will protect the country's runners from learning Kenya's tactics. Kirwa said some of the gold medals Kenyas lost were clinched by athletes who have been training in Kenya ahead of the olympics.

Could it really be that Athletics Kenya is dismissing the commonly held belief of genetic superiority? That seems to be the message they're sending with this admission that copying the Kenyan training environment and learning the tactics (training or racing?) is enough to win gold medals.

If we live long enough, we may see. Wink

According to the AK statement, we've already seen it.

Get genetic advantage may not be enough, except when you are very close. Being small is already an advantage in long distance running.
Moreover, some genetic advantage amongst some ethnic groups in Kenya and Ethiopia has been found by scientists.

Like what?

I know the population at large has an advantage (typical build) over many places, but the elites from the world over have pretty much the same build. I'm not aware of anything beyond that that has been identified.

They are more resistant to stress fractures-- just one of a few.

I've never heard that before. Got a source?

I will have to get back to you on that one because I have not read about running in a few months: not off the top off my head...I am at the Library. I will have to get the exact page, but it is listed as the last, 7th, major factor that can contribute to injures (not being of either East or West African origin) in the Lore of Running by Mr. Timothy Noakes, M.D.

"Kenijscy maratończycy Wilson Erupe Loyanae i Nixon Kiplagat Cherutich zostali zawieszeni na dwa lata, a Moses Kiptoo Kurgat na rok za stosowanie niedozwolonych środków. To kolejne wpadki biegaczy długodystansowych z tego kraju w ostatnim czasie. (...)"
from sport.wp.pl
3 more Kenyans caught and suspended.
I do understand the pressure. There are only about 50 countries that can adopt a Kenyan long distance runner.
