One of my favorite Christmas presents and a new favorite pastime is a video game called Dance Dance Revolution.

For those of you who don't know, DDR is game where you use your feet to play. There are 4 directional arrows to hit certain combinations, rhythms, and speeds depending on the song. A lot of fun!

I've noticed it gives me quite a workout sometimes and I even feel more agile since taking it up.

Funny... one of the members on our cross team spent his summer playing DDR instead of training. That's why was faster than he was at the beginning of the year Razz

I do not know, if DDR does qualify as work out or not, but I am certain that dancing is (I took dance classes when I was about 15-teen, but I am a bad dancer).

I got a new DDR game for my birthday the other day. Its pretty easy since I've played the game. My thought is that DDR can only qualify as a workout if the intensity is high enough. I'll have grab a heart monitor sometime!

Yep and I bought another DDR game just the other day. Did I ever mention that all these games come equipped with a "workout" mode? I've tried it, and it seemed to be far simpler than the original game mode. The steps were not as rapid, and you'll never fail a song.

Interesting fact though, based on the outcome of how you finished the song, it gives approxiamate calories burned and aerobic equivalents.

Very cool...I'm all about the home workouts, especially on rainy days. I've actually just started a fitness DVD program called PUSH that I really like. Besides the two customized training sessions it gives you each month, you are also supposed to do 100 min of cardio with their program and whatever else you want to do. Seems like DDR would be another way to work in cardio at home when I want a change!

In addition to the variety of diffuculties and songs, the speed at which the arrows appear onscreen can vary. This can teach one better reaction time... I guess...

I read in a video games magazine theres a game like DDR called "Dance Factory" and will create on-the-beat steps to music off any music CDs you put in while the program is running. I don't know how it works, but it sounds "revolutionary"!

Well, it's definitely an increaser for coordination skills and balance. As for a workout, I think you can get out of it what you can put into it - you can definitely make your dances more cardio-like by picking up the pace, doing some more jumping action, etc. I've seen my share of people working up a sweat with that game! Smile
