I've been watching the results of the current Australian outdoor season and they seem to be producing some incredible performances by a couple of their juniors.

A fifteen year old girl called Georgie Clarke ran 2:01.81 in an 800m at the Canberra Grand Prix a week or so ago (I think she also won the 800m at the World Youth last year). At the same meet, a sixteen year old boy called Andrew O'Neill ran 3:48.25 in the 1500m. I notice that he also ran 1:51.09 in an 800m last weekend.

Is there anyone here at a similar age who is running anywhere near these times?

Australia seems to be pretty consistently cranking out some very good junior times, but as far as I can tell, it hasn't really carried over to their senior runners' performances of late. I read a Mike Power (Arkansas) interview this past year where he was saying he was a sub-4 miler (hopefully, I don't have things mixed up) in high school, and that it really didn't seem all that momentous. Only three Americans have ever done it! Although Power's a very solid runner, he's hardly done anything historic.

I believe the US girls' h.s. record for the 800m is 2:03...

US High School record is 2:00.07 (Kim Gallagher, '84 silver medalist at 800). Mary(Decker) Slaney went 2:02 as a 14 yr. old.

Any idea why those times are not credited for the high school record? Obviously, Slaney's was pre-h.s. Did she not run faster over the next four years? As I recall, she was ranked top-10 among Americans in at least one event from age 13 on! Gallagher's Olympic time would have been too late to count for the high school season, I would assume, unless she had not yet graduated.

Good stuff!

I'm not sure how much we'll hear about O'Neill internationally this year (excellent time, though), but Clarke might even make some noise in the Olympics...
