I forgot where this was supposed to go, so I'm starting a new one (okay?).

Now, the questions is: "Is the marathon a walking event or a running event?"

For a first time marathoner, the challenge is usually just to finish - running if possible, walking *if absolutely necessary*...and It's true, a minute a mile of walking will only add about 8 to 10 minutes to your finish time.

However, while there is nothing morally wrong with walking during the race, if you're forced to, planning to do so (other than at water stops) is, in my opinion, defeatist.

Don't enter the race with a give-up mentality. Prepare for it, and "go for it." If, towards the end, you are forced to walk a little, do so, but swear to prepare better the next time.

While the goal for a first marathon is usually just to finish any way possible, the goal for a subsequent marathon is usually to finish without walking (except at water stops).

Once one has finish an all-running marathon, the next logical hurdle is to better your time, or train for a specific time goal.

If you have any questions about training for your first marathon, or improving for your next event, please feel free to contact me at my website. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com
