I am training for the San Diego marathon and have started doing long distance runs (12 miles and more). I try to make myself go to the bathroom (#2)before the run, but I always find myself half way into the run desperately needing to go. Do you have any suggestions for relieving myself?

Not much you can do during the race. The damage is already done... I would recommend taking a close look (figuratively) at your diet and see if there is anything there that needs to be changed.

One thing that triathletes and other endurance athletes do is to make sure they eat dinner at least 12 hours before the race so they can have time to "empty" before race time.

A high fiber diet will facilitate this as will drinking enough fluid.

Good luck!!

During the last 3 years I have put myself on a pretty good routine and I rarely get out of it. I eat at the same time every day and this usually results in routine BMs which help. I think a lot of people do their long runs when they have a chance and therefor put them in too close to a meal. Plan everything!!!

If it's any help realize that its happened to the best of us. I like to give myself plenty of, ummm......prep time before my long runs so that I will have all my business done before I start running. I also will put some toilet paper in my pocket before I leave the house just in case.
