The problem is that you are running on/off. That's not making any progress whatsoever. When you're not running then you are going into entropy (disorder in a system), your body weakens because you're not using it *for* running and then a few days later you kickstart it again and the cycle repeats.

There are three types adaption that I came up with. They may be a little bit TOO profound, but hey, it all makes sense.

Type I: Entropy (2nd law of thermodynamics), not running at all and just getting weak over time (becoming a worse runner).

Type II: Maintenance, your body weakens for a while and then it strengthens again and so on. You're basically going from -2, to 0, then to 2, and then back to -2. Your average is pretty much 0, you're not getting better or worse.

Type III: Progress, your body keeps on strengthening as you're using it for running everyday. (Some people only need a few days, depending on their level of fitness). There are three exceptions or just one exception I suppose and those are 1.) Overtraining 2.) Age, I sort of consider this to not be an exception because you can still make progress with age, but it is slower 3.) Diminishing returns, this is similar to number two in the sense that progress becomes slower, but not terminated. You can be Hicham El Guerrouj, and still make progress in the 1500m/mile, whether it is a hundreth of a second a nanosecond or even a yoctosecond (not like any technology could ever detect a yocto Laughing ), but it's still considered progress, he's getting faster.

From all of this however, I think that there is such thing as physical long term memory. Why is it that after not running for 3 straight months , you only have to spend ~2 weeks to get back from where you left off? It happened to me before. It was as if I've never ran in my life and after 2 weeks, I got to where I was supposed to be all over again.

I hve been running lately between 1.5 miles and 4.2 miles nearly every day, since around 2 weeks ago. I ran with 20--lb vest and with 16--lb water in my backpack: very light loads.
I do not pay any attention to me speed, yet.

Join a running club with others running or something. I think you really need that.

If you join a running club, you will be more likely to run consistently and actually get somewhere. Just join any place where you can run workouts with others.

Good, keep it up. Don't worry about speed or any workouts. Worry about the mileage and focus on running further every week. It should only take 2-3 months to reach 60 miles a week. If you don't do that, then you can't get anywhere. Mileage is the first step for every beginning runner. It doesn't matter how much you've ran if your times tell a whole different story. You'll still be a beginner up until you reach a sub 19:00 5K and a sub 5:20 mile. It's not written anywhere, but in the "world" of running, those are a few rough examples of the very first barriers to break. You can't get there if you don't do step one.

And a club would make this process easier and more likely for you to reach the goal. If you're like me who enjoys running alone, then there shouldn't be any problems.
