Additionally...
Icing can help, by reducing swelling and pain you would be able to accomplish some of the exercises that you could not otherwise do. _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

This reminds me of what Dan said before. That will only help "mask the injury." All you're doing is numbing the pain receptors and nerves, but what goes on inside, still goes on inside. I did that by taping my lower legs when I ran and it greatly reduced my pain. However, my shins hurt even more about 2 hours after the run when I took the tape off. The harder trained runner>less trained runner but also the healthy runner>injured runner. _________________ My favorite all time race: Hicham El Guerrouj - Prefontaine Classic Mile 2002 http://youtube.com/watch?v=4YykUTHzOL8

I agree with what Dan said. what you did and what I am talking about are opposite.
Compression and running on an injury like shin splints will do that (you are only hiding what it is and doing what caused it in the first place.)
icing and then doing excercises to stregnthen and fix what is a discrepancy is different. it will aid in a quicker recovery. _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

My shins have gotten alot better in the past two weeks. The excersises that i have been doing have been helping alot. Im not sure where they are at right now because i have been too sick to run for the past 4 days. |

Sometimes, forced rest can be a blessing.

Yeah, you may be right. I can start running again tomorrow and i'll have three days to get ready for counties and then another week to get ready for section championships. The rest may be helping but the not running is killing me. |

Just be prepared for your legs feeling really good when you start back up (lungs may be a different matter, having been sick), so don't hammer so hard from being fresh that you're sore a few days later when it's time to race.

I always find the first day back is a kind of feeling out process... but that the second day is when I need to look out because you are like - hey this feels OK let me go tear it up... _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

Absolutly terrible. I mean my shin splints are way better but i cant take more then two steps w/o coughing. I spent my practice yesterday walk/jogging for 20 min and could not do anything more then that. I did get to spend about 45 minutes in the wieght room though. I just hope this cough goes away before saturday |

Well i had my first pain free run in about a month. My cough was gone and my shin splints are basically gone. I can't wait for stupid counties and sections are over so i can start my distance training |

Excellent. Keep on doing the various shin strengthening exercises to keep them from coming back upon resuming regular activity for a few days... Once you're over the hump, they should be a thing of the past.
