I've loved to run since childhood and in my adult life I enjoy it to keep me fit and reduce stress. I just had my 3rd child and I started running again just a few weeks ago. In that time, my left shin has started cramping up on me to the point that I can't run. I have to stop and walk it off. But I don't understand why it's just my left shin. I don't want to stop running because I'm so anxious to get back into shape, yet the situation is not getting better. I'm soooo frustrated and also concerned. What should I do?

Where in the shin? Upper, lower, inside, outside? One possibility is that your shoes are laced too tight, which can put pressure across the top of your foot, ankle/achilles area, and into the shin and calf, basically cutting off circulation. If you are running along the same road in the same direction often, the camber could put more strain on one leg than the other. Condition of your shoes? Running surfaces?

I agree with Dan about the camber of the surface you are running on .. You could also have a hip imbalance (one side higher than the other) from child birth (I am making the asumption that you are female from your post, please forgive me if I am wrong) .. The other question I have is about your warm up routine and whether or not you stretch that area prior to running ..
